Niagara Region and Fine dining at Treadwell (Review)
Before our friends flew back to Hong Kong, we took them to the famous Wonders of the World in Canada – Niagara Falls. After that, we visited 2 wineries at Niagara On The Lake, Inniskillin and Peller Estates. Finally we had fine dining at Treadwell – Canadian farm to table cuisine.

Treadwell Review
It wasn’t the first time Deb and I had been to Treadwell despite the 2 hours drive from Toronto, we found that the chef Stephen Treadwell is so creative and most importantly they have 7 course tasting menu with wine pairing. That’s why we decided to go back. Also, we support local food – all the wines/herbs/veggies are from the Niagara region. It is NOT easy to find the same quality fine dining experience with similar price range in Toronto, the only places we had been to were in Quebec.
Although we are not professional food critic, yet we have been to Michelin 3 star restaurants in Las Vegas, Molecular Gastronomy in Quebec, and traditional restaurants in France, Spain and Italy. I guess we are qualified to give some reviews. Check out our Food and Cooking section on this blog.
My Comments – I wouldn’t talked about each course individually since overall they tasted extremely good in taste and well balanced, I could actually tasted different level of details that the chef put into the food. The smoked whitefish, salmon and 38 days aged beef tenderloin were just outstanding, everything were so fresh and packed with flavor. The creative part was the salmon skin was deep fried separately and it tasted awesome. The use of poached egg was interesting in the potato soup, but the smoked whitefish just balanced the taste perfectly. Surprisingly, the Souffle was even better than those we had in Paris, it was so smooth!!! Chili Ice Cream was so unique and paired extremely well with raspberry wine, must have.
The only comments I would say is the homemade garganelli and raviolo have room for improvement. Note that it has nothing to do with al dente or not, the texture on the bite has overpowered the meat inside or around it, perhaps maybe make it slightly thinner. Also, green beans were used in one of the courses, the taste was totally fine but the look was a bit ordinary, I would look for some more interesting shape beans instead.
My rating for Treadwell:
- Taste: 4.6/5
- Creativity: 4.6/5
- Plating: 4.5/5
- Service and Environment: 4.5/5
- Price: 4.4/5
- Overall: 4.52/5
James Treadwell (son of the owner) was so friendly and we enjoyed the experience so much. Definitely strongly recommended. Remember, it’s farm to table cuisine and it’s more down-to-earth style fine dining, you don’t need shirt and tie. If you are looking for Foie gras, Caviar or gold flakes, go somewhere else. It is an Art that you need to appreciate that the chef brings from the farm, and taste the creation process behind it. Compare to many restaurants in Toronto, many so called “fine-dining” are cookie cutting business, you need to experience yourself to tell the difference.
Royal Caribbean Bahama Cruise – Cococay, Nassau and Miami
This was a family gathering trip, totally 8 of us went to Bahama on Royal Caribbean Cruise. I didn’t bring the DSLR to Cococay since I wanted to swim, but then both 24-70 f/2.8 and the camera body was splashed by the sea water at Miami South Beach – it was really fooked and repair cost was around $500 CAD. Sigh…
DIY Powder Room Makeover
If you have read my previous article about Home Depot Clearance, you will know those are killer deals and you have to hunt for them. This time, Deb and I were walking at Home Depot after dinner AGAIN, we spotted there was a Sonata 24″ Vanity laying around (made by Canadian company, Magick Woods). We talked to the service desk and they looked at the computer saying that’s a returned unit of a special order. So, what’s wrong with that? If you have good eyes, you will notice on the FIRST picture of the sink, the drain hole is not totally horizontal. Well, it’s not bad for minor defect if it’s 50% off the regular price.
Removing Bathroom Builder Mirror and light fixture
Similar to Removing the ceramic towel bar and toilet paper holder article I wrote a while ago, the ugly builder mirror was glued to the wall. In order not to damage the mirror (to be re-used on other projects), I used fishing line and metal wire to cut through the glue at the back. After 30 min, I managed to take the mirror down with minimal damage both to the wall and the mirror. Ugly builder light fixture removal was easy, in additional to the visible screws, there were grey color rings on each light socket. After removing those rings, you can take it apart easily.
Why do I need to install shut off valves?
Like other DIY bathroom projects I did in the past, I insisted to cut the copper pipes and installed shut off valves to both hot/cold water – the plumbing part took most of the time. The reason is, I do not have to rush finishing the job since shutting off the main water valve in the basement affects the water supply for the whole house.
Before and After
My wife Deb picked the color as usual and this time she chose a green color from BEHR at Home Depot. Originally, I was worried about that green but I had to trust her since she was my interior designer. It turned out to be outstanding! Note that I used 2 caulking – white color for inside the sink, but transparent for the edge that is touching the wall. Total material cost was around $630 CAD with tax.
(Note: Most photos were taking using iPhone and only the finished photos were taken using DSLR camera)

Winterlicious – 2012 lunch at Senses review
This is our first (and also last) Winterlicious in 2012 since fine dining in Toronto is too commercial and we can’t find any surprises. Anyways, for $30 CAD a person on lunch menu, there are 3 courses each.
First of all, I picked up the menu and the word “Foie Gras” captured my eyes. But if you read it carefully, it said “Foie Gras scented” LOL… For $30 a person, I didn’t expect a piece of big Foie Gras like in Paris. Well, I don’t know the bio of the chef, but Deb told me he is Asian no wonder why I could find some Szechwan marinated stuff in the menu. Of course, being Asian, we aint gonna eat that.
Duct Leg Confit – Okay, the duck leg confit tasted pretty good, I would give it 90/100 WITHOUT the sauce. The sauce was TOO sweet with strawberry flavor and it overpowered the duck (See photo? it’s in pink color) Honestly speaking, it didn’t even match IMO. Interestingly, in the menu it said “Quince and goat cheese compote” but I wasn’t able to find a single trace of that. Perhaps, they ran out of quince and replaced with strawberry???
Roasted celeriac Soup – Pretty decent but no surprise, the portion was bigger than other fine dining restaurants. Well, it’s less elegant but good in value – is it good or bad, depends of your point of view.
Foie Gras scented chicken – We didn’t see any Foie Gras, but that’s totally understandable because the menu said “Foie Gras scented”. Overall it’s a good piece of chicken, but presentation could have been a bit better. Look at the sauce pattern, if Gordon Ramsay were there, I bet he would asked the chef to re-do it.
Citrus cured salmon – If I have to grade the Chef, this is the one who plays very safe. Salmon was very good in taste especially combined with the grilled sweeten bak choy, as well as lentil. Yet, nothing special though.
White & Dark Chocolate Cheesecake – Cheese Cake ball looked very cute and they tasted like ice cream instead of cheese cake. I am not sure if that’s good or bad.
Calvados scented apple crumble – This is actually one of the best apple crumble I have ever had. Good match with the Calvados caramel sauce.
Overall Verdict and Rating: Decent price, tasty and good quality 3 courses, the food was good but absolutely lack of the “wow factor”. For $30 lunch menu per person, we have absolutely no complain. Two of us plus one glass of French Kiss Martini, total came out to be $61.30. Good price. However, if I were paying regular price for this, I would definitely have to think about that. My rating for Winterlicious 2012 at Senses:
- Taste: 3.8/5
- Creativity: 2.5/5
- Plating: 3.5/5
- Service and Environment: 4.5/5
- Price: 5/5
- Overall: 3.86/5
For Winterlicious, I strongly recommend to go and try it out, it’s definitely better than a lot of restaurants out there in Toronto.
(All photos were taken using iPhone, quality was not that great coz I didn’t have a lot of expectation so I didn’t bring a good camera)
Update - Interestingly, we are not the only people who said that… LOL… other people said exactly the same.

Guest room painting with Paris theme + IKEA coffee table mod
The guest room project has been postponed for several years, finally Deb and I got some pressure to finish it because we have friends coming over in a few months. The cheapest and fastest way to renovate the room is to fill it with IKEA products!
BEHR Premium Plus Ultra (Paint + Primer in one) Review
Before visiting IKEA, we needed to paint. In order save time, we bought a new kind of paint from Home Depot which does NOT require primer. This new BEHR paint (see references section below) actually saved us quite A LOT OF TIME and it does exactly what it claims and covered the builder’s yellowish paint with 2 coats, but smell was quite strong though.
If you have read my old blogs, you knew that I used to love Benjamin Moore paint because of its thickness and I used to do 1 coat of primer + 2 coats of top coats. This new BEHR paint has the similar thickness as Benjamin Moore and it did save me so much time – I strongly recommend.
LACK Coffee table – It’s too high, let’s cut the legs
We bought everything from IKEA. After we assembled the LACK coffee table we found that it didn’t have the proper height. Originally Deb wanted to return it, but since it was so cheap I decided to shorten the legs to give it a try. Using the precision Japanese saw, I cut around 4″ in length (in 2 cuts). Well, I didn’t expect to find solid wood in IKEA products, however I didn’t expect all legs were hollow!!! At the bottom of each leg, there was a 1/2″ particle wood for reinforcement. No wonder IKEA can price their products at such a low price point, indeed I have to say it’s pretty smart since it’s very light weight and still strong. To re-assemble the strength of the original legs, I had to move the particle wood and hot glued them back to the shorten legs.
Finally, the room’s done and the cats were having fun! Now, it looks like an IKEA show room. Update: We bought 2 pieces of art work to make the room has an unique theme - contemporary Paris, especially the metro map is so colorful. (Working in progress photos were taking using iPhone so quality were quite poor, but the final photos were taking using DSLR obviously)

Mythos and Rini’s Birthday Party
This post combined both Rini’s birthday party on Jan 10, 2012 (4 year old) and Mythos’s party in Dec, 2011 (3 year old). They got a new scratching post as birthday gift and as well as special treats! As for the cup cakes and French patisserie are for human consumption. Sigh… those pets bakeries in Toronto only make cakes for dogs, there is none for cats.
Home Depot Clearance – Bought brand new sink for only $30 (Reg: CAD $234)
One night after having dinner, Deb and I went to Home Depot for a walk looking for some ideas on powder room vanities. At sinks and vanities department, something on the floor caught our attention – there were 2 unopened boxes with yellow clearance labels on it for $30 each. Out of our curiosity, we opened them and thought it was just some cheap sinks, we thought that the regular price would not be exceeding $50 CAD each. After checking the SKU on our cell phone, we were SHOCKED to learn that they were selling for $234 CAD at HomeDepot.ca and $182 US in the States.
We were a bit surprised that no contractors picked it up yet perhaps it was late that night, so I talked to an HD associate in that department and he told me that it’s a “Special Order” someone paid for the deposit and backed out from it. He said that the SKU was NOT even on their store computer, they just marked it whatever price to get rid of them – Nice! So we took both of them to the cashier and spent at least 10 minutes because the bar code or SKU was not found (not surprised). They ended up calling the manager to override it and we paid $60 CAD for both. What a deal! With tax, we paid $67.8 ($30×2) vs $525.5 ($234×2) value, saving of $457.65!!!!

Shopping for the Faucets
Since we got such crazy deal on the sinks, we wanted the same on faucets too. We looked at various brand names including Delta, Kohler and Price Pfister but they were way too expensive. So, we ended up buying the faucets from Costco for around $65 each, it’s made by “Water Ridge” which I have never heard of. One thing that looked promising was that it uses ceramic disk supposed to be more durable, but who cares since it looks good and it’s cheap. It also comes with 25 years warranty (if you are able to get hold of them).
Installation – 6 hours for 1st and 3 hours for 2nd
Installation was not that difficult, although there were some challenges. As you can see in the photo of 1st sink installation, because the new sink is 4.25″ above the counter top, I had to extend the copper pipes as well as the ABS drain pipes. On the copper pipe, I put additional shut off valves to make future maintenance easier.
My soldering skill was still pretty good, since I haven’t done it for at least 4-5 years, there was no leaking at all when everything was completed. It took me half a day for the 1st sink including 2 trips to home depot to get parts. It was a bit longer than I expected and for 2nd sink, it took half of the time. We are very happy with the result, we just love this contemporary above counter top rectangular sink design. Too bad it’s not on granite counter top, otherwise it would look even better. Finally, Rini jumped up onto the sink to examine it.
(All working in progress photos were taken using iPhone, so quality wasn’t that good – photos were mixed with both 1st and 2nd sink installation. Rini photos were taken using DSLR)
When to use Telfon tape or pipe compound?
The installation manual of Water Ridge said you need Teflon tape or pipe compound on the water line connectors - That is wrong. Since the flexible hoses come with rubber gaskets, it uses compression on the rubber to make it water tight, there is NO NEED to use tape or pipe compound on thread level, similar to your garden hoses or washing machine. Google it yourself, pipe compound on rubber gaskets will make situation worse. Note: With rubber gaskets, never over-tighten.
So, when to use Telfon tape or pipe compound? Basic rule of thumb: Anything without rubber gaskets. For example, if you are using olive brass compression fittings in toilet supply line (non-flexible one), then you would need. In the photos, I have shown the old faucet where it didn’t have any rubber gaskets, therefore pipe compound was used. Another example is that fittings without rubber gaskets I fixed in Rancilio Silvia V3 pump leaking on my espresso machine.
American Standard Overflow Flaw
As a Software Engineer, I love put stuff to the test and push them to the limit. See the last few photos? The water could not drain fast enough through the overflow hole, I think that’s a serious flaw because I tested my old sink and it didn’t have this issue. The problem was caused by the plastic decor thing where the hole is way too small, workaround is to remove that and no more overflow! Perhaps someone from American Standard needs to take a “Water Overflow 101″ course.
Tips:
- Since one of the copper pipes was way too close to the panel at the back, I wrapped a stack of wet paper towel with some aluminum foil. So the flame would not burn the back during soldering.
- Use Plumber’s Putty around faucet head to create watertight, anything else please use Silicone II caulking, including the drain. As you can see in one of the photos, Water Ridge has a YELLOW warning sticker telling you DO NOT USE Plumber’s Putty on drain pipe – Only Silicone can be used.
- For the tight space where the caulking gun couldn’t be reached, extend it using a small plastic tube, it worked.
- Water Ridge gives you a very unique tool to open the front of the faucet, there is a filter you may need to clean after several years. It’s a good idea to keep everything with the manual in a zip-lock bag and tie them under the sink. Also, wrap the hot water line with foam.

New Year wish for 2012… play, eat and sleep.
Meowy Christmas 2011
This year was in a rush taking photo of Mythos and Rini in the basement, so that quality wasn’t as good but thanks to Photoshop for post-processing. Mythos and Rini were moving around so much and it was so difficult to capture a good shot, as you can see their poses were a little bit odd. I didn’t have time to do another session, so here we go – Meowy Christmas and Happy New Year!
Mythos and Rini in 2011
In Year 2011, we haven’t posted any photos of Mythos and Rini on this blog – that’s pretty horrible! Now, it’s almost the end of 2011, so we decided to post all the photos taken during the year. In about a month, Mythos is going to be 3 years old and Rini is going to be 4 years old soon. What’s up recently? Not much, just enjoying life – sleep and play as usual.
